iPhone 4S Without Camera

In all modesty, why would someone want a camera-less iPhone 4S? Did it ever crossed their mind that the integralcamera not only in Apple’s but in all other camera based phone, smartphone or not, is as important as its battery? But then again, we have lived where mobile phones didn’t have any clickers and we were able to survive that generation. And apparently, a Singaporean manufacturer still believes in old school devices with a modern, smartphone twist.

M1, the Singaporean operator mentioned above recently announced the availability of its ‘non-camera’ iPhones. For those non believers, the Singapore Defense Ministry (MINDEF) has issued a directive that servicemen shall only use smartphones without a camera or those phones whose cameras has been removed. M1’s approach has been approved by the MINDEF and is apparently on the verge of bringing in a new market to those who have to serve a mandatory two year service in the Army.

According to M1, both front and rear cameras have been completely taken out – not just covered or something, but completely removed from their iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S variants and ‘may not be reinstalled’. The manufacturer also added that they will issue a certificate on each camera-less iPhone to prove that it is MINDEF approved.

The ‘downgraded’ version of the iPhone 4 and 4S is bundled with a two year plan from the operator without the option of buying the said device at retail price and will cost $38 more than its camera equipped counterpart. The service is also not available to current iPhone users, meaning that you can’t just bring in your iPhones just to get the camera out of your device. M1 also added that a one year warranty under a third party vendor will be offered but with an additional $321 (Singapore Dollar) more and will follow the warranty terms given by Apple.

Singapore’s SingTel and StarHub are also clinging on the camera-less iPhone and are talking with MINDEF about the idea of releasing the same device. Both have not released a confirmed release dates and prices.

Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro Late 2011

The early 2011 MacBook Pro is honestly Apple's best effort to date. Only using quad-core CPUs on the 15 and 17-inch models, and offering an optional Thunderbolt Display that can act as a modern day dock makes this platform, particularly the 15-inch model, the perfect candidate for users who want the power and flexibility of a desktop with the portability of a notebook. Apple gets the mobile revolution in more ways than one, and its MacBook Pro/Thunderbolt Display combo is the perfect example of that.

It's this very combination that I've been using, partially since the introduction of the Sandy Bridge MacBook Pro earlier this year (the Thunderbolt Display didn't arrive until later). I've been quite happy with the setup. With the exception of lackluster Quick Sync adoption by Apple and obviously limited GPU options, I have very few major complaints.

Late last month, Apple updated its 2011 MacBook Pro lineup - likely the first and last update before Apple adopts Ivy Bridge in Q2 next year. We got our hands on the new base 15-inch MacBook Pro configuration, which received one of the more substantial upgrades over the previous model. As this is still a fairly minor upgrade, be sure to read our original review of the platform for a deeper dive into all of the aspects of the system.

Silicon Updates

The focus of Apple's late 2011 update, despite rumors to the contrary, was on the silicon inside the platform. As the Mac business is a relatively mature one, we can expect a slower pace of chassis and design upgrades compared to the iPhone/iPad businesses for example.

We'll start with the CPU, the lesser updated chip in the new MacBook Pro. System pricing hasn't changed, but CPU speeds have all gone up.

Just as before the 15-inch MacBook Pro is only available with a quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU (codename Sandy Bridge). The $1799 configuration goes from a 2.0GHz i7 to a 2.2GHz model. Be warned, this isn't the same 2.2GHz model that was available as an upgrade earlier this year though.

A quick run of Cinebench points out that the 2.2GHz i7 in our system may be a Core i7 2675QM. The original 2.2GHz option was a Core i7 2720QM. What's the difference between the two? Not a whole lot.

Max turbo is down a bit on the 2675QM. It was 3.3GHz on the 2720, but now it's 3.1GHz. The two, three and four core turbo limits are also down by 200MHz compared to what they were in early 2011. If you didn't have a 2.2GHz early 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro, these differences likely don't mean anything. If for whatever reason you're comparing to an early 2011 2.2GHz model, you'll see a slight regression in CPU bound performance.

The on-die GPU is a hair slower as well. You still get an Intel HD 3000 GPU (12 EUs) but the max turbo moves from 1.3GHz down to 1.2GHz. Or if you prefer another way of looking at it, the 2675QM is the same as the 2670QM, except the GPU is able to clock 100MHz higher (1.2GHz vs. 1.1GHz).

The upgraded 15-inch configuration comes with an all new Sandy Bridge SKU: the Core i7 2760QM running at 2.4GHz. Unlike the old 2.3GHz part, the 2760QM still only has a 6MB L3 cache. You do get higher base and turbo speeds. There's also a new 2.5GHz quad-core option that can run at up to 3.5GHz with a single core active. That's an absolutely insane frequency for a notebook. Notebook-as-a-desktop users will appreciate the flexibility here.

All of the new CPUs support AES-NI, although once again Apple is the victim of Intel's silly segmentation. The entry level 2.2GHz part does not support VT-d (Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O), which allows virtual machines to have direct access to I/O devices (including PCIe GPUs). I'm not sure if any current virtualization software for OS X supports VT-d, but the absence of the feature is important to note nonetheless. The rest of the CPU lineup supports VT-d.

Battery Life

TDPs haven't changed, nor has the MacBook Pro's battery capacity, so overall battery life should (and does) remain relatively unchanged from the early 2011 models. Worst case scenario you can expect around 2.5 hours of battery life under load. With moderate load expect 4 - 5 hours of use on a single charge. And under a very light load you can easily exceed 7 hours.

I ran our normal battery life suite, however Lion has made some of the numbers a little less comparable than I would've liked. The lighter use cases (e.g. our web browsing tests) see a drop compared to our older Snow Leopard results. Under full load the new platform, even while running Lion, actually did a bit better than its predecessor. All in all I'd say the new MacBook Pro is pretty consistent with its predecessor - Lion just threw a wrench in a lot of our battery life comparisons so we'll be starting over from scratch in building our new database.

Acer Aspire S3 vs. ASUS UX31E

Introducing the Ultrabook Contenders

When Intel initially put out the idea of the ultrabook as a new type of laptop, I admit harboring plenty of skepticism—isn’t the ultrabook just a gussied up rebranding of an ultraportable? Unfortunately, being a skeptic/cynic has served me well over the years, and so now here I sit in front of two ultrabooks trying to determine a couple of things: which ultrabook is the “best” right now, and are any of them actually worth buying. The first question may be a bit easier to answer, but the second….

I hinted at this in our Holiday 2011 Mobile Buyer’s Guide, but if you’re in the market for a good ultrabook, you could do a lot worse than to go out and grab a MacBook Air and call it a day. If you don’t like OS X and are happier running Windows 7, the MBA can of course run Windows as well, and it still probably rates higher than several of the ultrabooks floating around right now. Yes, the MBA will cost more for similar specs, but what the specs often don’t tell you is how laptops compare in the more subjective areas like build quality, keyboard quality, and display quality. That said, we still have these two ultrabooks to review, so let’s where they compete and where they fall short.

In the one corner we have Acer’s Aspire S3, with a 256GB SSD and an i7-2637M processor (1.7GHz base with Turbo up to 2.8GHz). Pricing on the S3-951-6432 we have in hand starts at $1230 online (down from the $1300 MSRP—and we’ve seen it as low as $1200 during the past few weeks). The base model S3-951-6646 on the other hand can be had for just $875 online (down from the $900 MSRP; we’ve seen t as low as $850). The entry-level model is different in a couple key areas from what I’m reviewing; first, it has a lower spec i5-2467M processor (1.6GHz base with Turbo up to 2.3GHz), and second it uses a hybrid HDD + SSD arrangement for storage. It’s that second item that worries me more, as the main HDD is a 5400RPM 320GB model and the SSD is a small 20GB unit. What’s more, the SSD isn’t used for any form of caching as far as I can determine (Intel’s Smart Response Technology requires the Z68 chipset), so it’s really just there to act as a swap file and a hibernation file repository. We’ll get to the full specs in a moment, but let’s introduce the other contender first.

In the other corner we have the ASUS UX31E, the big brother to the UX21E that we reviewed as our first ultrabook encounter. ASUS also sent us their higher end UX31E-DH72 model, sporting a 256GB SSD and an i7-2677M processor (a 100MHz clock speed increase over the previous model i7-2637M). The base model UX31E-DH52 has a 128GB SSD and an i5-2557M CPU for around $1100, sometimes less. Intel originally set a target price of $1000 or less for the base model of any ultrabook, but this seems to be a pretty loose definition as we can’t find a $1000 UX31E right now. The UX31E-DH72 we’re reviewing tips the scales at a rather hefty $1399 (MSRP and online price).

The market for ultrabooks has also expanded to include a few other laptops, like the Samsung Series 9. We’ve seen that in person, and the one area where it’s clearly better is contrast ratio on the LCD—and a matte LCD as well. We haven’t been able to test it yet, but we should have that one soon enough. Performance of the base model with an i3 ULV processor will certainly be lower than what we’re testing with the Acer S3 and ASUS UX31E, but we saw the upgraded NP900X3A-A02US model with i5-2537M and a 128GB SSD going for as little as $999 last week; sadly, the price is now back up to $1430, which isn’t nearly so interesting. It’s one to keep an eye out for, though, as $999 is a massive discount compared to where the Series 9 launched and that particular model has pretty good specs.

Both the Acer and ASUS offerings are 13.3” ultrabooks, which puts them in the same family as the Toshiba Portege Z835 and the MacBook Air 13, so that gives us five potential ultrabook-like devices to discuss (seven if we include the UX21E and MBA 11). How do all these ultrabooks compare to each other, and can one of them rise to the top? Not surprisingly, the answer to that question is rather complex and will ultimately distill down to what you value most in a laptop. We have examples of longer battery life, better displays, higher resolutions, larger and/or faster SSDs, and faster CPUs. There’s also the keyboard, build quality, and overall design to consider. Let’s give the rundown of the Acer and ASUS ultrabooks before we hit the benchmarks, and then we’ll wrap up with some thoughts on the ultrabook market as a whole.

One of the biggest bulletins from Google at the start of 2006 was a set of free software referred to as “Google Pack.” Google Pack was developed with a purpose to provide pc customers with important software program which Google felt every user wanted for his or her new or present PC. One of many programs in Google Pack was free virus safety software.

The virus safety software in Google Pack was provide by Symantec the seller behind the popular Norton Antivirus products. The Norton Antivirus products have constantly received glorious reviews from independent testers and still remain one of many main anti virus products. For Google Pack to start out with Symantec supplied Norton Antivirus 2005, though not the newest model, a more than capable anti virus program. The one limitation was that Symantec would solely supply 6 months of virus definition updates after that the person would need to upgrade.

At first of 2007 Google persuaded Symantec to supply a virus safety program which the user wouldn’t have to upgrade from. Norton Antivirus 2005 was replaced by “Norton Security Scan.” Regardless of the title Security Scan both scans for AND removes virus threats. The product is based on the identical award-winning virus scanning and removing know-how discovered within the Norton Antivirus range of products. Extra importantly the virus definition updates are usually not restricted to 6 months.

There are a number of different good reasons to download Google Pack. For starters, Google Pack now includes a Starter Version of Spy ware Doctor which is based on among the best anti adware programs in the marketplace today. There is also a wonderful photograph organizer software program called “Picasa.”

In both office suites, you can find a lot of extras. OpenOffice has Draw and Math, while Microsoft Office provides more with InfoPath, Outlook, Publisher and OneNote. Out of all these programs, I found OneNote to be the best (Outlook is also good, but I’ve replaced it with Thunderbird – a free, excellent program with much more functionality). However, in OpenOffice, both extra programs can be very useful, sometimes. If you need to design XML, check your email without using a browser (or when you have more accounts and want to check them all at once) and publish something on the web, the fact that OpenOffice doesn’t have these options can be a setback.
However, if you consider the cost of both office software suites, it all makes sense. If you can afford Microsoft Office Pro at $500 and will use all it’s features, then go for it. But if you just need the basic stuff, you’ll probably find Microsoft’s pricing to high. Why spend $149 on Microsoft Office Student (which is quite limited in features) when you can get the much better OpenOffice?

The Skycar M400 is a flying car prototype which utilizes Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) technology. This makes it possible to take off and land without the use of an airport runway. The American company Moller International envisions a future where flying car owners can simply take to the skies directly from their driveway.
The Skycar M400 has seating capacity for four people, but its design can also be scaled up to the six-seating M600, or scaled down to the single-passenger M100.
The Skycar has a highly streamlined design equipped with four ducted-fan nacelles – two placed on either side of the cockpit. Each nacelle fully encloses the engine and fans and produces both lift and propulsion when airborne. Vertical lift is obtained during takeoff by redirecting the airflow downwards by deflection vanes inside of each nacelle.

Embrio: One-Wheeled Motorcycle

The EMBRIO Advanced Concept is a one-wheeled recreational and commuting vehicle for the year 2025, designed by the Canadian company Bombardier Recreational Products. Although the riding position is similar to that of a motorcycle, the vehicle uses sensors and gyroscopes to balance up to two passengers on a large single wheel whilst driving.

Although the vehicle will also remain stable when motionless, with two small front wheels deployed at speeds below 20 kilometres per hour (12.5 mph). To move forward, the rider activates a trigger on the left handlebar. At a speed of 20 kilometres per hour (12.5 mph) the front wheels or “landing gear” retracts so the rider is balancing on the large single wheel. To turn the rider leans to the left or right. The saga of IR35 is full of twists, turns, loop-the-loops and groin-kicks, and doesn’t show any sign of letting up soon, following George Osborne’s decision to take the path of least resistance in his 2011 Budget.
Now a freedom of information request from the PCG has forced HMRC to divulge some interesting figures which shed some light on their tremendous mis-management of IR35. Between April 2006 and April 2011 a paltry 322 IR35 investigations were initiated. Not only that but the figures show the numbers of investigations are dropping off significantly – down from a comparatively massive 158 in financial year 06/07 to just 12 in financial year 09/10 (although it did increase slightly to 23 last year).

HMRC also released figures for the amount of tax recovered through IR35 investigations over the same period. Although the relationship between number of investigations and revenue over time is difficult to calculate (as different investigations may not have been finished in the same financial year they were started – in fact they often drag on for a number of years), this data shows if anything a more precipitous drop in numbers.

I do not have a chance to be a whole book about the application to read, but based on reading a few pages from a sample from the book I picked iBooks store experience is pretty much like reading about Kindle for iPhone, but with a larger screen.

This app is very useful for the iPad users. If you are a Twitter power user, you insert API for IPAD. The interface works much better on a bigger screen and you can sync also studied with other procedure you have installed TweetDeck.

7. Fwix

Fwix is an aggregator that retrieves top news on your surroundings. Stories from various sources, and his elegant, clean interface very easily scan headlines. And unlike newspapers, are no ads on the front page “Contents” page. If you read the full version of a story, please click ads on the sides of the source to get.

Many Linux distributions are featured, including the usual suspects, like Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora, but also some other distros that are perhaps not as popular yet, such as CrunchBang or Pardus.

This guide is intended to help those purchasing a PC. If you follow the guidelines presented here, you should end up with a reasonably priced PC that will easily run today's demanding software.

Desktop PC Recommendation

The system specification outlined here is intended to be a general purpose PC suitable for word processing, home office, Web browsing, programming, games, etc. A system following these guidelines should cost between $800-$1200. For desktop publishing, graphic design, or CAD work, an additional 256MB of memory at a cost of around $50 would be helpful. Upgrades in monitor size and video card might also be considered for these graphics intensive tasks.

All components have a short explanation available by clicking on them. This may be helpful in choosing a system that doesn't match these specifications.

If you are buying your computer from a major PC manufacturer, it may be very difficult to find the specifications for each component. If this is the case, just compare what you can find to the list below and then try to find reviews of the specific models in which you're interested in PC related magazines or web sites.

Motherboard

This is the board through which all the other components of the PC connect. A motherboard with cache memory will increase system speed by 10-20%. However, most laptop CPUs come with their own cache and do not require it from the motherboard.

I/O

Input/Output ports. This includes serial, parallel, external video and other connectors. The more types of ports you have, the more choices your computer has for communicating with other devices and computers.

CPU

The CPU is the brain of your computer. Most of the time, your CPU is idle, so a faster CPU does not necessarily make a faster computer. However, tasks involving multimedia presentations can require a great deal of CPU power.

Memory

Also known as RAM. This is where the computer's CPU works on problems. Having more RAM can give the largest increase in system speed, unless you already have enough, in which case adding more can be useless. How much is enough? Good question. Here are some guidelines for Windows XP:

Light word processing, infrequent Web browsing, email, 1-2 open applications at a time

Case

This can be the single biggest problem with a laptop. Sure, it runs great, but if it hurts your hands to use it, you’ll probably be very unhappy. If possible, try out any proposed purchase first, or at least a very similar setup. Most people are uncomfortable with keyboards that have the space bar too close to the front of the case. See Pointing Device.

Hard Drive

Also known as storage. This is where the computer puts programs and information for permanent storage. Always buy as much as possible. The trend in software has been toward larger and larger application suites, so a good rule of thumb would be to think of the largest amount of storage you will need, then double that.

Floppy Drive

3.5" 1.44MB is standard. Floppy disks are used for backups, transfers between computers, and software distribution. They should never be used as primary storage as they have failure rates hundreds of times higher than hard drives.

CD-ROM Drive

This is necessary for loading many new software titles, and can usually be used as an audio CD player as well. The x rating (e.g. 12x) is a measure of how fast the CD spins compared to an audio CD player. New CD-ROM drives are starting to use constant angular velocity mechanisms (audio and older computer mechanisms are constant linear velocity). Therefore the data can be read faster at the edges of the disk as compared to the inner tracks. These newer drives will give either give a speed rating at the inner and outer tracks (e.g. 12-24x) or will give the outer track speed only (e.g. 20x Max). However, there is no standards body for CD-ROM drive naming, and several manufacturers add a few to the x rating. Access time and transfer rate are the most important aspects of CD-ROM drive. Lower is better for access time, higher is better for transfer rate.

DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM are new technologies in removable storage. All DVD drives can read CD-ROM disks, so you can get one of these instead of a CD-ROM. DVD drives are more expensive than their CD-ROM counterparts, but a DVD-ROM disk can hold the equivalent about 12 CD-ROMs (6 per side). This is enough storage to hold a full-length movie. Current DVD-RAM disks have slightly less capacity (about 8 CD-ROMs) and the DVD-RAM drives are quite expensive, but you can use them as a convenient backup device as well.

Screen

This is your primary feedback from the computer. Larger screens are easier to read, and higher resolution screens give you more places to put your multiple windows.

There are two main types of laptop screens available now: Dual Scan (DSTN) and Active Matrix (TFT). Both are based on backlit LCD shutters. The difference is that TFT screens update faster and can be viewed from wider angles. Objects moving rapidly on DSTN screens tend to blur because of the slow response time of the screen. There have been improvements to the DSTN technology to increase screen response time. These improved DSTN screens are usually called something like "Fast Scan" or "High Performance Addressing" screens. They fall between regular DSTN and TFT screens in both price and performance.

Video Card

Most laptops can drive their own display adequately, but they frequently don’t look very good on external monitors. It’s a good idea to look for one that will drive an external monitor at the resolutions listed on the recommendation chart. A video card with 3D application support would be a good buy.

Sound Card

If the laptop you like does not come with built-in sound, you can get PC cards that will provide this function. However, the speakers will not be built-in and can be unwieldy.

Ethernet Card

If you connect through an Ethernet port, this is a must have item.

Keyboard

This, like case and pointing device, is a matter of personal preference. Most people prefer a keyboard with around 19mm key spacing. Most laptop keyboard keys do not depress as far as a typical desktop keyboard. Look for one that has at least 3/4 throw. If possible, try out any proposed purchase first, or at least a very similar setup.

Speakers

Built-in stereo speakers are convenient, but for presentations or music enjoyment, external speakers will probably have to be purchased. For external speaker recommendations, see the desktop section.

Pointing Device

Also known as mouse. This, like case and keyboard, are a matter of personal preference. If possible, try out any proposed purchase first, or at least a very similar setup.

Operating System

Windows Me will give you the most options when purchasing application software. It is much easier to set up and maintain than previous versions of MS Windows.

PC Card Slots

Also called PCMCIA. These are your laptop’s expansion slots. Modems, sound cards, Ethernet cards, and other add-ons can go here. More is better.

Modem

This provides network connectivity over the phone. 53/33.6 thousand bits per second (v.90 download/upload) is the fastest currently available speed.

Many modem alternatives are emerging. These include ISDN, xDSL, and cable modems. These new technologies are all faster and generally more expensive than a traditional modem. You can contact your local phone company or cable provider to see if they are offered in your area.

Battery

The battery is what your laptop runs on when it's not plugged in. Look for battery life of 2 hours or more. An option to put in a second battery in place of the diskette or CD drive is a plus for long trips. There are several types of batteries to choose from:

Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) are cheap and can last many years, but NiCds have "memory" and thus require regular discharging to remain viable. If not discharged and charged every 30 days or so, the battery will permanently lose some capacity. If NiCds are well cared for, they can have life spans of 2000 cycles or more.

Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) can hold about 30% more charge than NiCds, and are less affected by memory problems. NiMHs have shorter life spans than well cared for NiCds. (Approx. 500 cycles)

Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries have some of the best characteristics of NiCd and NiMH batteries. They also have nearly twice the capacity of a NiCd. They do not suffer from memory problems. They are also rated at around 500 cycles.

Warranty

One year is standard, though many newer laptops are coming with three year warranties. More is better.

To bring you this world-exclusive review we're using a pre-production sample, but it should reflect the quality of the final product.

As you may have noticed, there has been a surge in the popularity of tablets recently. Thanks largely to the original Apple iPad, the tablet market is seeing innumerable entrants, a few of which we covered in our recent iPad2 VS the world article. However, for those who are serious about work as well as play, and who want something that can be a 'proper' computer when necessary, the rarer convertible tablet laptop is still the way to go, offering a swivel screen which can fold down across the keyboard to morph into a slate. With a glorious 12.5in capacitive IPS screen (the same panel type found in professional monitors like the HP DreamColor LP2480zx and, for that matter, the iPad) and Wacom digitizer, rugged exterior, all-day battery life and Intel's Sandy Bridge processors inside, Lenovo's new ThinkPad X220 Tablet may well be the one to rule them all.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot of choice in the convertible laptop field. We've looked at quite a few of the available entries: the Packard Bell Butterfly Touch and Acer Aspire 1825P TZ are both decent choices if you're on a budget and must have a tablet, but their Core 2-based CPUs felt slow even last year and they don't offer pen input. The HP TouchSmart tm2also suffers from dated graphics and processing power, and though it has a Wacom digitizer built-in, its screen's dreadful viewing angles let it down badly.

With the X220T, all these shortcomings are not applicable. Lenovo has fixed our issues with the original X200t to make for easily one of the best convertible tablet laptops available – in fact, it wouldn't be far wrong to say it's one of the best laptops in general.

Design-wise, the first word that may spring to mind is utilitarian. If you think the traditional ThinkPad angular black lines look good, this latest model isn't likely to change your mind, but it may be a little too industrial for some people's tastes. Though its protruding battery (at least if you go for the larger eight-cell option) does add an unsightly bulge, it's also moulded to be a comfortable handgrip for holding the X220T in tablet mode.

It sports the ThinkPad trademark soft-touch finish on its lid, which lends it a premium feel that's both ergonomic and very rugged. The inside is entirely finished in lightly textured matt black plastic, except for an inner bezel around the screen which is soft-touch like the lid, making it more comfortable for tablet use. Two soft but sturdy protrusions that slot into matching slots in the bezel ensure the screen will never rotate accidentally, while a protruding lip at the screen's top makes it easier to open.

ThinkPad build quality is legendary, and for good reason. We're glad to say that the X220T is no exception: plastics are as solid as they come, there's not even a hint of unwanted flex or creak, and the rotating screen hinge is strong and sure. The only exception is the extra button strip above the keyboard, but that could be due to the pre-production nature of our

Although the app’s name suggests this is for vocalist only, you can use it to loop any type of sound or rhythm. So, for example, you could great a beatbox-style rhythm, then overlay it with a guitar riff, before adding a vocal line over the top.

The controls are pretty straight forward and there’s a built in tutorial to help you get started. And once you’ve finished your glorious creation you can upload it to the SoundCloud to see whether other people like it too. The latest version also supports in-app purchasing of additional audio effects.
